First of all choose a grip.

pick a character and learn they're movelist and some combos.

The most important thing to learn is your character's bnb combos and the combo used for punishing blocked reversals. Also learning a blockstring and your characters basic mixups would also be a good idea.
For example ryu's blockstring is c. lk/lp, c. lp, cr. hp/mp xx special. He can throw after the first c. lk or the second hit. He can also use an overhead or use cr. mk instead on the cr. hp/mp to make the opponent guess between high blocking or low blocking. once you've learn the basics go on over to challenge mode and try and beat it.
