I've been planning to make a mod for hl2, or well try to...
This isn't anything serious, but i wanna try my hand and mapping a realistic map.
So to start off I need map ideas from you guys. Would be nice if you included a story to go along with it.
It could be like a mall or a hospital. Be creative! Hopefully hammer will have the stuff i need to make it.
Chances are this will be a survival horror. Hopefully i can do it with no combat.

How about you need to save your girlfriend from prison. When you get there you find out that they decided to mutate her. So then you get pissed and decide to kill the mayor or w/e.

I think something like your idea would be good for a first attempt. Although it isn't very interesting. Eventually i would like to make something that makes a statement on the human condition.
I might just have to go with the default save the princess game...
Oh well, here is my first idea:
The name of it would be Emergence
Basically you would start off in a small town going about your normal life. Then you hear a sound in the distance, something like machinery, but nobody but you notice it. It gets louder and louder until you find the source. You end up on a hill that overlooks the town. The sound gets even louder and then stops suddenly. You find a broken vent in the side of a rockface. Crawling through it you see what appears to be a prison. When you finally get out of the hole it collapses behind you.
From that point on I'm not sure what I want to do with it. This will probably change drastically.

Ya sorry about the idea, it's a bit of a cliche. But I guess it's good for starting.

I kinda got this idea after thinking about what stephen said about combat. but what you could add is combat but not directly. so you have to do stuff like set off traps and such.

They had a lot of that in the actual Half Life 2 game.

So I've decided that the game is gonna start in an apartment room. The doors are locked and all the windows have a concrete wall 3 inches outside them. There are no visible ways out and the only light comes from a television that casts an ominous glow over the entire room.
Now, i need help thinking of a way out of the apartment.
Remember that this should have some meaning behind it, however small.
I'm using a setting from 1984, but changing it a little. If you didn't already know, 1984 takes places in a world where there is no privacy and individuality and mindfulness are vaporized.
Think of things that hint that our protagonist is somehow different from everybody else.

A dream maybe and when he (she?) tries to discuss it no one has any idea what a dream is.

Good idea with the dream thing, but i'm not sure if i can do that.
Now I think that in this sort of game any contact with other humans would detract from the feeling i want to create. Anyways i dunno if i could get the ai to do what i want them to...
The goal is to create a world where you are completely alone, but being watched at the same time.
Maybe the protagonist will have a dream or something that will tell him what to do.
Updated story:
Mr. Protagonist wakes up in an apartment room, doors locked no way out. He tries to peer out the window even though its sealed of by concrete(there's a small gap that he can see through but not escape through). He can see other rooms beside his, and a concrete floor 30 feet below his floor. Everything is uniform except a stray body laying on the ground below with a pool of blood around it. Seeing the window as a futile means of escape he looks elsewhere in his cramped living space.
From that point on I'll just go with this for now:
When Mr. Protagonist looks back into his room he hears a voice coming from the room beside him. The voice says "Go where the telescreen can't see you." Mr. protagonist looks back through the window to see who the voice was but sees nothing. Looking around Mr. p looks at the light cast by the television and notices that there is a corner unlit by it's glow. Walking to that corner he falls into a hole and finds himself....
I dunno yet.
Just now I had a gameplay idea, not a great one albeit but w/e. My idea with his escape was that the telescreen(something from 1984) was somehow controlling him.
I need to establish that the light from the telescreen is evil and needs to be avoided. Then it should be easy enough to create puzzles where your goal is to reach daylight while avoiding light from the telescreens.

Try making it so the telescreens don't seem evil in the beginning, but you realize they are evil later on. E.g, portal - the robot voice doesn't appear evil at first

Now that i think of it a bit more, this idea that I'm getting at is too ambitious..
I'm still like really bad with hammer...
I'll just save this idea for later..
For now i should stick to the simple shit.

Your a combine and you need to kill 100 headhumpers with a shockstick.
And trust me, I have learned that if you aim high, you'll learn much more than making what you know. First hand experience.

well, the thing is that if i made it now i would have to make sacrifices.
I don't think i could do it with no combat.
I can't possibly light it the way i intend.
I can't map realistically.
hammer models suck.
I'm pretty lazy and emergence can't suck.
For now I'll just make something easy that i can learn from and then move to the big stuff.
Btw, why would i take advice from austin?
